Art has taught me that I should not care about what other people think.
Mr. McCray walked into the art room after the Old Master’s Drawing critiques, and he saw that my eyes were watery (I had just yawned) and it’s easy to assume that he thought I was upset about the critiques. I actually was, but I was hiding it (I hope it wasn't visible). He came up to me, and I can’t remember the exact conversation, but I do remember that he said something to the effect of, ‘Don’t worry about the critiques. There will always be critiques, no matter what you do. Just do what you want to do.’
Mr. McCray was right. If you do what other people want, then what are you? You're the loser. You are being directed by everyone else, not by yourself. You'd be a puppet. There will always be critiques; you can’t satisfy everyone. I shouldn't have a goal to make everyone like the things I make, because there will always be critiques. Today, my goal is to do what makes me happy.
What Mr. McCray said also applies to life. I shouldn't care what anyone else thinks (which I care about too much). People will always judge, no matter what. People just naturally judge, and I don’t blame them. Why should I have an unachievable goal to make everyone like me? I shouldn't. I should do what makes me happy. If I do what makes me happy, I’ll have a happy life. And having a happy life is the ultimate goal of life.
